String Along Ukulele
By Elayne and Norm Ruplen

We just finished our first "Golden Horseshoe Ukulele Jam and Jug" at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. It was a very successful event with about 70 people in attendance (not all uke players - some spouses and friends). We thought that you might want to know what's going on in southern Ontario. It's not the "Ukulele Desert" that it once was. We hope you enjoy these pictures of our regional Jam and Jug.

Nuked Ukes
By Loyce Smallwood

This time last year I was struggling with learning the three basic chords and feeling very frustrated in my class at the Auburn rec department. Always determined to meet my goals, after six months of practice and a few private lessons, I found the need to connect with other musicians so I dove into the internet and found a directory of uke players and sent them emails about starting a uke group in Auburn, California, a Gold Rush town Northeast of Sacramento.

By late November, I had four interested musicians and started the group named Nuked Ukes, a blast of fun/mirth with only one goal in mind: to have fun and enjoy music and camaraderie. Now in our eighth month, we have had as many as ten musicians come to our weekly practice at a local restaurant. We encourage all levels of play and provide the printed music complete with chords. The average age is probably around 55 and this works just fine for me.

Our repetoire consist of old pop songs and Western favorites and we have about 35 songs in our bag. Our leader Cliff also accompanies himself on the mouth harp. I host/produce my own live music program on 950AM KAHI--the only broadcasting station in Placer County--and I often have us playing live uke music and we also play the likes of Victoria Vox, James Hill, Steven Sproat, Tippy Canoe and Danny Estocado and Li'l Rev so I am able to promote the NUs and spread the word on my live Sunday 9am program.
